1. Operating Principles of Pneumatic Actuators

Pneumatic cylinders are mechanical devices that convert the potential energy of compressed air into a reciprocating linear force. In a double-acting configuration, compressed air is alternately supplied to the cap end and the rod end of the cylinder, enabling powered extension and retraction. For single-acting designs, a mechanical spring is integrated to return the piston to its default position when the air pressure is vented, which is ideal for clamp or safety fail-safe applications.

2. Calculating Piston Output Force

The theoretical output force of a pneumatic cylinder depends on the working air pressure and the effective piston area. The formula used is:

F = P × A

Where F represents force (in Newtons), P represents the operating pressure (in Pascals), and A is the effective piston area (in square meters). Note that on the retraction stroke, the rod cross-sectional area must be subtracted from the piston area, reducing the available force.
